Nutritional Cardiology

Dr. Chong's primary specialty is Nutritional Cardiology.  Please note, this is not a recognized medical (MD) specialty, and Dr. Chong is not a conventionally trained, or board certified cardiologist. In fact, considering the vast differences between their treatment philosophies, he does not want to be one, and he considers his primary job to be keeping his patients from ever having to see one!

That said, if the need does arise, Dr. Chong will not hesitate to involve a conventionally trained cardiologist in his patients' care, and he is lucky enough to have good connections with several well trained, and open-minded ones.

Loosely defined then, Nutritional Cardiology primarily involves the use of dietary counseling and concentrated nutrients, as well as food and herbal extracts, in the prevention and treatment of various cardiovascular disorders. These disorders include:

  • Atherosclerosis (plaque in the arteries)
  • High blood pressure
  • Congestive Heart Failure
  • Arrhythmias
  • Heart Attacks and Stroke (prevention)

Due to their contributory role in the prevention and treatment of these disorders, various lifestyle factors such weight loss, exercise counseling, stress reduction techniques, and toxin avoidance and elimination are also emphasized.

An Ounce of Prevention...

We all know the deal. Prevention is always preferable to trying to treat a disease, and this may especially be the case with cardiovascular disease.  Once a patient has a heart attack or stroke, they can at least count on the addition of multiple drugs to their daily lives, many of which cause horrendous side effects. Their condition may also require one or more dangerous surgical techniques. Rarely are people the same after such ordeals. For these reasons, Dr. Chong's absolute primary focus is on helping his patients prevent these conditions from ever occurring in the first place.

To that end, in addition to the therapies noted above, Dr. Chong employs a number of non-, or minimally invasive tests to help get a more thorough assessment of his patients' risks and progress, once treatment begins. These tests include:

  • Advanced blood/lipid markers such has LDL particle count, Lp(a), hs-CRP, ADMA, TMAO, Lp-PLA2, and many others.
  • CIMT and Carotid Ultrasound Screening
  • Coronary Calcium Scoring
  • Referrals for EKGs and echocardiograms
  • Heavy Metal and Organic Pollutant Screening

A Note on Diabetes:

Due to the fact that diabetes is a primary contributor to cardiovascular disease in this country, strong emphasis is also placed on risk assessment, prevention and drug free treatment of the highly prevalent and destructive condition.
